Florence's Gutter I remember once, we swam
through the hot air, into the channel
behind houses, above the abyss of an alley.
The fence and drop off
glimmering asphalt laughed below
adjacent: ivy covered wall of wood.
Houses loomed like giants
over red deck, through woody essence
behind: sea of salt colored rocks.
Wings raced overhead, beating
corridor approaching, the thicket of thorns
ahead: red discs, a creek of salt.
Checking, return to sandy wall,
stepping stones, cinderblocks faded like sky
peppered shingles: scraped knees.
Who will share
this summit of ambition?
a child's fear:
eyes in the window.

The sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penue
